Assignment #4: Whitman

Look over selected passages from Peter Sampieri's play Grass about Walt Whitman.  Volunteer for a part that expresses a particular aspect of Whitman's poetry.  Whitman the Populist, etc. With Profs Pachter and Schorr framing the scene, we'll perform several scenes with everybody taking a small part.

Writing assignment #2: Bradstreet

Write a 5-sentence analysis of "The Author to Her Book":

Sentence 1:  Identify who is speaking, and give evidence to support your assertion.

Sentence 2: Identify to whom the author is speaking, and give evidence to support it.

Sentence 3: Describe the images the author uses.

Sentence 4: Deduce what the author is trying to say through this poem.

Sentence 5: Conclude what the poem means to you.

Label each sentence with your initials;

for example I would label my sentences MS-1, MS-2, MS-3, MS-4 and MS-5;

Writing assignment #1: Emerson

This series of writing assignments for AMLIT 315 will allow each student to enter in to dialog with each of the writers and thinkers presented in the course.

For the first writer Emerson, pick out five sentences from his "American Scholar Address," and respond with five reflections of your own by asking, "what have I learned from this sentence?"
